In
1996 Matt put together a collection of deschooling pieces, as
a kind of reader, or primer, for people interested in alternatives
to school. The book looks at free schools, home and unschooling
and the theoretical and historical bases for school resistance.
Published
by New Society it is called Deschooling Our Lives, and includes
essays by John Gatto, John Holt, Grace Llewellyn, Leo Tolstoy,
David Guterson, Zoe Readhead and many more, as well as an introduction
by Ivan Illich.
The book is now out of print, but is widely available at libraries around North America. It is being republished in a significantly updated and revised form by AK Press (www.akpress.org) and will be out in April 2008.
It has also been translated into Korean and Turkish and a revised version will be out in the UK later this year. Check back for more details on that.
